Due to extreme weather conditions in California, there has been an increase of infestation in all types of infestation-prone produce, including also Romaine lettuce. Our trained Mashgichim have found insects in these products even after repeated washings. Extra care should be taken when washing and checking these products, and it may be prudent to avoid purchasing them without a reliable certification until infestation levels have gone down.

Due to this situation, the availability of Star-K certified iceberg salad products from Dole is going to decrease for at least the next few weeks. Many bags will not bear the Star-K and they are not certified. Please check each bag for the Star-K symbol.

DOLE COLESLAW SALADS that were sold at One Stop as late as Wednesday, April 6, did not bear a P next to the Star-K symbol, and should not be used for Pesach.

UNGAR’S GEFILTE FISH that is being sold at Costco is not Kosher for Pesach, and states so openly on the label.

PRIGAT STRAWBERRY BANANA DRINK (can, UPC#7-290001-594452) with a Best Before date of Feb/06/18, has been stamped erroneously as Kosher for Passover. The OK certifies this product only for year-round use, not for Pesach. All other Prigat products that bear the Passover symbol are Kosher for Pesach without any concern.

OBERLANDER BAKERY KOSHER FOR PESACH “CHOCOLATE KOKOSH CAKEhas been recalled due to the presence of undeclared almond paste. Consumers who have allergies to almonds run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. Details are available at theyeshivaworld.com.

SCHICK’S CHOCOLATE BABKA, which is chometz, is still being sold in the Passover section at Costco in Madison Heights, Michigan (see attached picture), despite repeated requests to the management to correct this. Consumers should voice their displeasure to Costco management.

MIKEE BRISKET COOKING SAUCE and MEHADRIN COTTAGE CHEESEwithout Pesach certification were found mistakenly placed in the Pesach section at One Stop Kosher Food Market. Please check every label of your purchases.

SOLOMON’S GLATT KOSHER MEAT: According to the New Square Kashrus Council, Solomon’s meat that states Product of Mexico and does not bear Pesach marking should be rinsed, due to the possibility of kitniyos starch on the plastic packaging.  Solomon’s ground meat requires special Pesach marking. For more details, see the letter from New Square Kashrus Council available at cordetroit.com.

Reminder TOMER MEAT being sold at Costco and Meijer, bearing a Triangle K, is not recommended. If this product was used, please consult your Rav regarding the status of your utensils.

NOAH’S MARKETPLACE in Southfield, Michigan, was inadvertently omitted from the list of stores where chometz may be purchased after Pesach.

New Square Kashrus Council Notice

In addition to the Pesach Updates, there are two Kashrus Alerts:

FRUIT FROM ISRAEL is being sold locally, and requires taking of Terumos and Maaseros. This includes Clementines at Costco and Noah’s (BAGU brand 5 lb. bag, and JAFFA brand 3 lb. bag; stickers on the bags state Product of Israel) and Sharon Fruit Persimmons at Joe Randazzo’s.

RECANATI and TISHBI WINES of 2015 VINTAGE are Shemitah products, and therefore do not bear an OU and are not recommended. They have been found recently in the Kosher wine sections of local stores.

NON-PESACH VERSIONS OF THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS have been found mistakenly placed in the Pesach section at One Stop Kosher Food Market. Please check every label of your purchases:

  • Meal Mart Chopped Beef Liver Spread
  • Mehadrin Greek Yogurt – Cappuccino
  • Bloom’s Potato Stix – 1 oz. – regular and Bar-B-Q
  • Achla and Miki brands of dips contain kitniyos and were for a short time not in the separate “Kitniyos” section.

Many mix-ups have occurred at other stores; check each product carefully. (Some examples: Schick’s Chocolate Babka [chometz] in Costco’s Passover section [see picture to the right]; Tabatchnick Chicken Broth without Pesach marking in Kroger’s Passover section, etc. etc.)

KITNIYOS PRODUCTS: Even those who eat kitniyos should check each label for a reliable Pesach certification, since the standard accepted certifications on these products usually state on the label that they do not include Pesach.

B’GAN frozen CAPRI BLEND vegetable mix is erroneously marked as Kosher for Pesach on the back of the package. This product contains green beans, which are kitniyos and should only be eaten by those who eat kitniyos on Pesach.

PRE-CHECKED ROMAINE LETTUCE packages sold at One Stop with K-COR certification are not acceptable for Pesach, due to the presence of chometz in the area where they are prepared.

HARVARD ROW KOSHER MEAT MARKET in W. Bloomfield, which is K-COR certified year-round as a non-Mehadrin and non-Glatt facility, is not certified for Pesach for any prepared foods, regardless of when they are purchased. All prepared foods there should be considered chometz and may not be eaten on Pesach.
