Flood Relief: Detroit Chesed Project

Detroit Chesed Project has committed its full resources to members of our community to assist in rebuilding and  replacing items lost in the flood.  We are securing relationships with several large corporations and local Jewish agencies to help with replacing those items, such as mattresses and box springs, hot water tanks, washers and dryers, carpeting, bookshelves, toys, clothing, etc.  We are also helping connect people with other local organizations to help with flood mitigation, restoration, and insurance claims.

Detroit Chesed Project can be reached online: www.detroitchesed.org

Storm Recovery & Relief

The Jewish Assistance Network is coordinating various relief efforts of Jewish communal organizations including the Jewish Federation, Hebrew Free Loan, and Jewish Family Service, in order to help families affected by the recent storms and flooding. Financial assistance, including grants and loans, is available for those with urgent needs.

The Jewish Assistance Network can be reached at (248) 592 – 2650 on weekdays from 8am to 8pm, and on Sunday from 9am to 5pm.

Shaimos

Another truck has been arranged to transport flood-damaged seforim and shaimos this coming Sunday, August 24, from the Oak Park / Southfield area. There is no charge for this service.

Items can be dropped off from 9:00am to 3:00pm this coming Sunday, August 24, at the Kollel parking lot, 15230 Lincoln Road.

Shaimos items can also be taken directly to Hebrew Memorial Park at 21503 E. 14 Mile Road, which is east of Gratiot Avenue in Clinton Township. Enter the cemetery from 14 Mile Road, using the second entrance gate. Drive past the office; dropoff pallets are located at the back of the garage.

Community Announcement

Jewish Family Service is partnering with Nechama, a disaster relief organization that has come to the Detroit area to assist with flooding.
Nechama provides free direct cleanup assistance such as clearing debris from inside and outside homes, removal of sewage and standing water, removal of damaged carpeting/other flooring, furniture, appliances, and any other objects that were damaged by flooding; they will remove saturated drywall and paneling, for example.
They do not provide financial assistance or replace lost items.
The current area of focus is: Oak Park, Southfield, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Berkley, and Royal Oak.
Those requesting assistance can be with or without homeowners insurance.  The focus will be on those households who do not have the means to have the work done themselves.

AS MANY GARMENTS ARE BEING FOUND WITH SHATNEZ INCLUDING THOSE THAT HAVE UNFORTUNATELY BEEN WORN, VAAD L’MISHMERES SHATNEZ IS RELEASING THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

“There are at least basic errors that some people have which have led them to wear shatnez.

  1. “Shatnez is not found in children’s or women’s clothing.”

“Wrong!  Shatnez is common in women’s and children’s garments. Recently, over 30 types of sweaters were found to be shatnez; most of them were women’s! Suits and coats of women and children are also being found with shatnez.

  1. “Shatnez is not found in garments purchased in Jewish owned stores.”

“Wrong! Many garments sold in Jewish owned stores are found to be shatnez. As garments are manufactured in non-Jewish factories, the Shulchan Aruch mandates that these garments are obligated to be tested.

  1. “I don’t have to test the garment. If there is a problem, the store will let me know.”

“Wrong! Unfortunately, almost every time shatnez is found in a Jewish-owned store, some garments are unaccounted for. In addition, usually some of the garments have already been worn.”

It has been reported in the name of several Gedolim that as a zechus for the safe and speedy recovery of the boys kidnapped in Eretz Yisroel, women may choose to begin Shabbos and light candles 10 minutes early.

Please be aware that this suggestion only applies to those who accept Shabbos at the regular candle-lighting time (today at 8:56 pm). Those who accept Shabbos early – at the time of Plag (today at 7:38 pm) – cannot and may notaccept Shabbos any earlier than that time.

Please recite the following kapitel Tehillim at the time of candlelighting as a zechus for:
